Malik Magdon-IsmailMalik Magdon-Ismail is a professor of computer science at RPI. His research interests are learning from data, computational finance and social algorithms.

One of the goals of this blog is to provide a more technical slant to popular news articles (Yahoo news, Google news, CNN.com,…),  especially when I think the article is erroneously inferring something from data. This kind of mis-inference often happens when biases in the data are ignored in the analysis.

Magdon-Ismail is an author of the book Learning From Data, a top-seller on Amazon in Machine Learning. Of course, references to the book on this blog are self-serving, despite our best attempts to be unbiased.

The title of this blog is borrowed from “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner”:

Day after day, day after day,
We stuck, nor breath nor motion;
As idle as a painted ship
Upon a painted ocean.

Water, water, every where,
And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, every where,
Nor any drop to drink.

We face a similar dilemma today with data surrounding us but wisdom scarce.
